Assessment Framework and Results
The Assessment Council adopted an assessment framework in 2005-06 to guide the development of an institution-wide program of student outcomes assessment. The agreed-upon categories of assessment, which mirror important transition points for OHSU students, include:
(1) Entering Student Information
(2) Mid-Program Progress Asessments
(3) End-of-Program Assessments
(4) Alumni Assessments
Each major program area follows the framework to identify the assessments in use and how the information is used to make judgments about program effectiveness. And, when appropriate, use the evidence to design new or redesign existing courses, program and experiences to ensure student and institutional success.
Many OHSU programs require periodic program review through seeking, achieving and maintaining specialized accreditation. The framework is designed to leverage the wealth of outcomes assessment data required by these processes and recognizes the need for institutional and specialized accreditation processes to be compatible with one another.
The Assessment Council members use the framework to inventory existing assessments by major degree and certificate program groups as well as identify gaps between "what is in place" and "what is optimal" for making judgments about the effects of educational programs on students. These "assessment gaps" become the basis for planning new assessments at the program, school and institutional levels.
